Camera Noise 1

This is going to be part of a series of blog posts about noise

Here are 4 photos, roughly set to the same exposure for the outside light (out the window)
the dark shots are with no flash
the second shots are with flash
Each photo has the central part cropped into via picasa and exported. Resolution size 740x560(roughly)

This is a test of in camera noise and also the noise created by Active D-lighting,

f/9.5.  1/250th. ISO 3200 WB 5880K
 Tokina 11-16mm @11mm
Active d-lighting High
Noise reduction. Normal.

Image below has the same settings only difference is this now has flash added in ttl mode.

 Close up version

Now lowering the ISO to 800 (800 is a good iso where noise is actually very low on the Nikon d300)

f/5.6. 1/250th. ISO 800 WB 5880K
Tokina 11-16mm @11mm
No flash

Exactly the same image settings as above but now with flash

f/5.6. 1/250th. ISO 800 WB 5880K
Tokina 11-16mm @11mm
TTL Flash

  1. Is it better to use the Active-D lighting. I kinda torn as some say use it and others say not to use and leave it off. Very interesting much noise is in there.

  2. I suppose dom its how far you want to push the true capabilities of your camera ,i too own a d300 and my own personal rule with this camera is not to push it past ISO 1600 active d lighting on except studio work .all images are general very usable.D3x can push it much further.

  3. only use Active D if your using JPG if your on RAW then dont bother,Raw is like using camera in manual settings one doesn't use exposure compensation buttons because they don't work in Manual same applies when using Active D in Raw,it don't work
post process in CS5 or LR or what eva you use will sort things out
